Privacy Policy

What we collect

Nothing. We have no servers, so there is no system anywhere that receives your data.

Specifically, Why Is Pain does not collect, transmit, sell, or share:

There is no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no crash-reporting SDK, and no attribution SDK in this app. We have deliberately not added one, and we do not intend to. Google Play's own console tells us how many people installed the app; that is all the measurement we get and all we want.

Where your data lives

On your device, in two places:

Both are removed when you uninstall the app.

Device backups

If you have Android's automatic backup switched on for your Google account, the operating system may include Why Is Pain's data in your device backup, the same way it does for other apps. That backup is made by Android, sent to your own Google account, and governed by Google's privacy policy — not by us. It exists so that your diary survives getting a new phone.

We never receive that backup and cannot read it. If you would rather it did not happen, you can turn backups off for this app in Android's Settings, under System → Backup.

This is the one way your data can leave your device without you choosing to send it, so it is worth knowing about.

Sharing and exporting

You can export everything you have logged as a JSON or CSV file. When you do, Android's share sheet hands that file to whatever app you pick — email, cloud storage, a messaging app, a file manager.

Once a file leaves Why Is Pain that way, it is subject to the privacy policy of wherever you sent it, not this one. Export files contain your complete diary. Treat them accordingly.

Internet access

Why Is Pain makes no network requests. It works identically in airplane mode.

The app does declare Android's INTERNET permission, because the framework it is built with (React Native) requires it in order to run. Nothing in Why Is Pain uses it.

Payments

If you buy Why Is Pain, the purchase is handled entirely by Google Play. Google processes the payment and tells the app whether a purchase exists. We never see your card details, billing address, or Google account. Google's handling of that transaction is covered by Google's privacy policy and the Google Play Terms of Service.

Children

Why Is Pain is a general-purpose diary and is not directed at children. Because it collects no personal data from anyone, no data is collected from children either.

Your rights

Because we hold none of your data, the usual data rights — access, correction, portability, erasure — are not requests you need to make to us. You already have all of them, directly, inside the app:

If you are in the UK, EU, or another region with data-protection law, there is no data controller relationship to enforce against us, because we never receive your data in the first place.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, the date at the top changes with it, and the updated version is published at whyispain.makektm.com/privacy.html. Because the app links to the hosted copy rather than embedding one, you always see the current version.
